Happy Holidays 2010

Hey guys, been a long time since I've posted anything up on my blog. Been really busy working on the latest movie, doing lots and lots of storyboards. Had a brief moment to draw something for fun so I just started drawing a few of my favorite things... the guys from my comic Alcatraz High! It's always fun to see these guys, at least for me, so anyways, hope you guys like the drawing and I wish every single one of you a very Happy Holidays! Take care and talk to you soon!

Design and Story Contest

Hey guys, been a long time since my last post.  Been crazy busy with work so I haven't had time to do any personal artwork to post, but hopefully I will have a moment to draw something special for the winter holiday... fingers crossed.

Anyways, my friends at Hinge Digital are having a Design and Story Contest.  The deadline is Dec. 31, 2010. http://www.animationmagazine.net/hinge-digital-contest/

Good luck guys!  Above is a 3D print of my character Gorz from my creator owned project: Robo Brigade.  These guys have the skills and the contest is a wonderful opportunity for artists and story developers to get their work out there and get featured in Animation Magazine.

All questions about the contest should be directed to the guys at Hinge Digital.  Their website is at hingedigital.com.

On my DVR

This is what I currently have on my DVR:

Chuck
Hawaii Five-O
Modern Family
Glee
Hellcats
NIkita
Smallville

So far Modern Family and Nikita are my favorites.  I might have to drop a few to make way for other shows or to free up some time to draw more.  Since I don't go out often, television tends to be my main outlet when I just want to chill.  Any suggestions on shows?  What do you guys watch?

This is a drawing of me chilling out watching t.v. in the back is my wife on Facebook and yes,  La Choy is my Sweet and Sour of choice.

Nightwing Stick Fighting

So the other day I was hanging out talking to this Filipino guy who was a Arnis instructor (Filipino martial arts).  He was telling me all that it has influenced, including Bruce Lee with Dan Inosanto to Manny Pacquiao.  I was like "For real?"  He was adamant, "Next time, look at his footwork.  That's all Filipino martial arts, man, that's how he gets his power behind the punches."

"F@*%ing cool!" is what I thought.

So I went on the internet looking up "Arnis", "Eskrima" and Stick Fighting and I was looking up images and one of the images that popped up was NIGHTWING.  And I was like " Oh $#!t of course, Nightwing has to be trained in Eskrima."  And for those of you who don't know me, Nightwing is my all time favorite character.  So in my MIND, Nightwing was trained and is a master of Filipino Stick Fighting.  I had this image in my head that I just had to draw out.

Scott Morse, a Pixar pal asked "Why aren't you working on your own stuff,  DC ain't paying you for that."  This is true, but I couldn't get this image out of my head.  So here it is.  Nightwing being all bad ass and taking on the gang from Ong Bak.

Alright, on to my own stuff...

I love photoshop.

So here is my character Jun Santos kicking ass using Eskrima sticks.  Just a side note, in my comic, this will be a dream sequence, because Jun isn't this bad ass... yet.

Goodbye Wildstorm

Before Pixar, Nickelodeon and Disney I was at Wildstorm Comics. I had just graduated from Cal Arts and I found out that I was going to be an intern at Wildstorm Comics as a penciller. I had a great time that summer, at the time the studio was still "Homage Studios", so both Wildstorm and Top Cow were in the same building. Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri were in the house along with some new talent like J. Scott Campbell, Billy Tan, Travis Charest, David Finch, Joe Benitez, Mat Broome and several other guys. I still remember the day when Jim brought over the Wildcat's theme music for the animated series...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtSPJZ-qlhA and it was corny back then too. (Sorry Jim). I pencilled a bunch of pin-ups, some trading cards and a Wildcats animated comic. It was alot of fun and I will fondly remember my time at Wildstorm. I was sad to hear that the brand is saying goodbye. http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dc-publisher-wildstorm-zuda-100921.htm

Here's some of the fun:
Wildcat's pin-up
Wildcat's (animated) cover

This was a pin-up portfolio piece that helped me get my internship gig.  Just thought I would throw it in.

Voodoo Vs. Razor trading card
Rainmaker Vs. Grunge
Swimsuit issue with Spartan and Voodoo

Wildstorm was alot of fun.  Thanks for the Wild ride!
(sorry I had to go there.)

50K Pageviews on DA!

Hey guys, so this is a drawing that I did to celebrate my 50K pageviews on Deviant Art:  http://barrypresh.deviantart.com/  It is a drawing to the cheerleaders from my creator owned comic, "Alcatraz High."  The piece also had the main characters, Miguel and Steve, in the background hidden slightly in the shadows.  In the foreground is a "chibi" version of the Football Mech.  He's sporting the number 50 to commemorate this special occassion.

I'm planning on showing a "Work in Progress" of this piece in a later post.  I'll start with the original sketch and talk about the choices I made along the way to this finished piece.  For now, I'll just tell you guys that I did use references for the girls faces and hair styles.  I used pictures of actresses, Jessica Alba, Amber Heard, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman.  I wasn't going for an exact look, just a slight resemblance; a vibe.  So I hope you guys like it and I'll post the WIP sometime soon.

San Diego Comic Con 2010

I grew up in San Diego.  So it has become a tradition, that every summer I would attend the San Diego Comic Con.  I've been going ever since I was a kid and for the past 7 years I have been there as an exhibitor, promoting my creator owned independent comic series: "Alcatraz High", "4 Gun Conclusion" and "Robo Brigade".  This last con, I decided to share my booth with my friends from Hinge Digital.  It was a great time and I was glad to share it with them.
I had a crappy disposable camera with me and all of my pictures came out super dark, so unfortunately all those pictures that I took with my friends and fans are not viewable.  Luckily, my buddy Arvin Budomo was there to take pictures at the event, so at least there are his pictures that I can post.  I just got the pictures in the mail today, so here they are.  Some, I am seeing for the first time as well.
This is the calm before the storm, Preview Night.  The booth is all set and we are waiting for the doors to open.
All of the comic goodies are on display.
A picture of me with Bryan Lee O'Malley, the creator of Scott Pilgrim.

GO CHARGERS!

Alright, this monday is the start of a new season for my beloved football team, the San Diego Chargers!  Here is a drawing of my character Sofia, from my comic series "Alcatraz High".  She is wearing her Bayside Bolts gear.  The "Bolts" is a homage to my favorite team and "Bayside" is because I live in the "Bay" now, okay... okay I'll fess up, it's actually a little shout out to "Saved by the Bell", that was their school.  Come on, you know Saved by the Bell was cool!

Anyways, here's to a new season.  GO CHARGERS! Kick some ass and see you guys in Texas!

Midnight Run

Big thanks to all you guys that are following me.  This one is for you!  I was gonna post it tommorow on my DA page, but I figured why not let you guys get first dibs.  I was inspired to draw the dynamic duo when I read this article, SPOILER ALERT http://www.newsarama.com/comics/two-batmen-mike-marts-100109.html  I gotta say I really love this dynamic duo team.  And I totally picture them running around on the Gotham city rooftops all ninja style.  When I drew this I was going for that whole Naruto ninja run, where they lean forward and their arms are at their sides.  This looks cool to me, and when the WB, eventually does this story arc in animated form, I hope they animate them looking like ninjas, doing crazy parkour on rooftops.  Just look at old Gatchaman episodes, it could be really cool!

Taking Flight

Hello everybody, my name is Bobby Rubio and this is my blog.  I am a Story Artist at Pixar Animation Studios and creator of the independent comic "4 Gun Conclusion" and "Alcatraz High".  I've been wanting to do a blog for quite some time and was always hesitant because I was struggling with the title of it.  Originally I was gonna go with "Grand Schemes", but that kinda sounded too cocky and a bit diabolical, which could work, but I didn't want people to think that was what the blog was about.  It's not about all my "grand schemes", it's about sharing my ideas, getting friends and just geeking out over stuff that I love like movies, comics, anime, toys, robots, women and everything else that was geektastic.  So I did this drawing yesterday, and I was inspired to start my blog today.  Driving into work I settled on the title of my blog "Chasing Rockets" from John Williams score of Superman.  I feel that it is appropriate, it feels right.  So here I am with my first post, take care and talk to you soon!
